Nepal is a land of scenic grandeur and unbeatable scenic allures. Trekking on foot is the only way of really knowing the people and places intimately. However, one needs not to be a mountaineer to trek in the hills of Nepal where more than half of the total population of the country live. A short trek will reveal picturesque hamlets surrounded by elaborate terraced fields and forested ridges; a longer trek may yield rich contrasts in people and culture from one ecological level to another. The rich variety in flora and fauna found within a short distance is another rewarding experience of trekking and, of course, there is always the prospect of viewing some of the highest mountains in the world.
In the densely populated central hills, there are numerous small shops serving tea and simple food to travelers at trail junctions, bridge sites and convenient resting places. The track may sometimes be rough because of the mountain terrain but it is, nevertheless, always a delight to arrive at numerous vantage points that reveal new vistas. In the mountain area, the track may traverse steep slopes with plunging waterfalls but the next village will always be ready to extend its welcome. In the high valleys beyond the Himalayas, villages are set wider apart but here also a traveler can find cottages and small hamlets to take refuge in. These Trans-Himalayan valleys provide sweeping views of grassy slopes, glaciers and magnificent snow peaks.
Wherever one travels, people are friendly and hospitable and the trails are safe. Depending on the season, one may meet on one's journey, local people in their distinctive dresses, laden porters, caravans of sheep and goats or Gurkha soldiers. Life in rural Nepal is hard but simple, however, there are at the same time many religious and social events that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the people. One can visit simple temples or elaborate monasteries for meditation, alternatively there are fishing and swimming opportunities in the clear mountain stream.
Trekkers who choose to travel light may find food and lodging on the more popular routes. Those who find Nepalese food too spicy may take a cook who can prepare meals according to their liking. Trekking agencies organize treks, on an individual or group basis, with a team of guides, cooks and porters that cater for all the traveler's needs.
A trek to higher mountain regions requires good mountaineering equipment and guides. Trekkers wishing to climb minor peaks along the way can make arrangements with the Nepal Mountaineering Association. For mountaineering expeditions, there are separate rules, which are mentioned in the mountaineering section of this information.
